The Monastery of Olimje

Olimje Castle was given its distinctive artistic and pharmaceutical character by monks. From 1663 to 1782 it was home to Pauline monks from the Croatian town of Lepoglava, who built the Church of Mary's Assumption as part of the castle complex. In this church, which features one of Slovenia's largest golden Baroque altars, the blessed Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek said the New Mass in 1824. For the last 15 years, the castle has been inhabited by Minorite monks. The preserved parts of the original castle include the southern and western wings and the castle pharmacy.
